The importance of checking all BACS reports
At any time a payer can choose to amend or cancel his Direct Debit Instruction (DDI) by giving his bank branch authority which will be effective immediately.
Amendments to the DDI may arise as a result of:
- The cancellation of the DDI
- The transfer of the payer’s account to another branch of the same bank
- Cancellation of the DDI due to the payer transferring his account to a branch of a different bank
- Written authorisation from the payer to his branch of a change to details of his DDI
e.g. change of account name or number, within the same bank - While not a permanent amendment to a DDI, the payer may dispute the advance notice given which may result in a collection being suspended until the dispute has been resolved
- Any one of the other reason codes shown in the tables below.
For the majority of our customers, the Bacs system makes available a number of reports. It is essential that you check all reports produced by SmartDebit as they contain important information about the processing of your payments.
The key reports we will provide to you are:
ARUDD reports
These detail any unpaid Direct Debits.
ARUDD – Automated Return of Unpaid Direct Debits.
The reports list the payments that could not be applied and the reason.
You should update your records accordingly.

It is considered Best Practice to apply DDI amendments and cancellations immediately or within 3 working days from receipt to ensure the accuracy of the Direct Debit collection & that your own records are updated to reflect the same.
DDIC reports
These detail any Indemnity Claims raised by your payers.
Direct Debit Indemnity Claim reports
Under the Direct Debit Scheme Rules paying banks are required to refund the payer in the event of an error. Paying banks will use the indemnity claim process to report the claim and to reclaim the refund from the service user. The information will be made available on a Bacs generated report called the DDIC advice report.
The reports list the payments that could not be applied and the reason. You should update your records accordingly.
