Start Direct Debiting in 5 easy steps

Our 5-step process is simple
You are just 5 steps away from setting up Direct Debiting through SmartDebit.
Step 1: Explanation
We explain clearly how implementation works, so that you are fully informed. We advise on the merits of accepting Direct Debits online or by paper. We also help you decide whether or not to integrate your systems to ours.
Step 2: Setting up a SUN
Do you have a SUN (Service User Number, formerly known as OIN) in order to set up your Direct Debit account and display your trading name on customers’ bank statements? If so, we will link our Bureau number to it and request that you notify your bank of our ‘indirect submitters’ details. This takes a few days to set up. Check that AUDDIS (Automated Direct Debit Instruction Service) and/or paperless Direct Debiting are already live (your bank will be able to help you).
Otherwise, we can arrange a SUN for you, so that money can then be debited from your customer, donor or members’ bank accounts then credited into your bank account. Having a SUN enables your customers to identify on their bank statements who has made the debit.
You can sign up customers as soon as the SUN is set up and live.
Step 3: Setting up AUDDIS
This takes four weeks and enables new payers’ details to be lodged with Bacs so that Direct Debiting can start.
Step 4: Decide if you want paperless processing
Would you like the simplicity of being able to sign up payers by Internet or phone? If so, you’ll need a further application form from your bank. It will take around two weeks for your bank to set this up, but there are many advantages to paperless Direct Debiting.
Step 5: Receive your implementation document
This is your essential document with all the details required to set up recurring payments through SmartDebit.
